Ideal for families, close to sandy beaches
Convenient location for sight seeing, salmon fishing & other outdoor activities
Listed below are just a few of the reasons why our guests have enjoyed staying at The Guardhouse. To read some their comments for yourself, please flick through the pages of the album at the bottom of the page ...
- the space and comfort offered
- the stunning landscape and shell sand beaches nearby
- "that blessed silence", to quote one of our guests
- convenient location for surfing, salmon fishing, trout fishing, sea fishing, walking, snorkelling
- centrally located between The Isle of Lewis and The Isle of Harris
- the light, which is an inspiration. There is a clarity in the air which is unique to the landscape of The Western Isles and this is certainly apparent around The Guardhouse.
- the night sky. Particularly in winter, this can be spectacular. With virtually no light pollution, the Milky Way and constellations are commonly seen and especially around the time of the equinox, the aurura borealis is regularly observed (although there is some luck involved in experiencing this phenomenon).
- the books in The Guardhouse library. We have a range of books, both fiction and non-fiction, to suit children and adults alike.
- the flora. Grassland beside the nearby sandy beaches (Machair) is a carpet of colour in early summer
the fauna
The area surrounding The Guardhouse is a haven for wildlife and to give a few examples, otters, red deer, golden eagles, snow buntings, sea eagles, a snowy owl, merlin, a corncrake and basking shark have all been observed by us on walks from the house. We watched a pod of whales - minke and two orcas - from cliffs at Mangersta and came across an arctic hare whilst scaling Mealaisbhal.
