light, which is an inspiration. There is a clarity in the air which is unique to the landscape of The Western Isles.
night sky, which, particularly in winter, can be spectacular. With virtually no light pollution, the Milky Way and constellations are commonly seen and especially around the time of the equinox, The aurura borealis is regularly seen (although there is some luck involved in experiencing this phenomenon).

fauna The area surrounding The Guardhouse is a haven for wildlife and to give a few examples, otters, red deer, golden eagles, snow buntings, a snowy owl, merlin and basking shark have all been observed by us on walks from the house. We watched a pod of whales - minke and two orcas - from cliffs at Mangersta and came across an arctic hare whilst scaling Mealaisbhal. We have also been fortunate enough to see a pair of sea eagles and a corncrake on sojourns from the house.
